Course CSSK01:

Introduction to
COMPUTATIONAL THINKING

  • About Computational Thinking.
  • Computational Thinking is a fundamental skill for everyone, not just computer scientists. With the growing ubiquity of computers worldwide and increasing social and business dependency on their use, the emerging skill of Computational Thinking is predicted this Century to become ' The Fourth R* ' ranking in educational importance alongside the established basics of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. A Certificate of Achievement from this course provides valuable evidence to employers and others of the formalised analytical approach to problem solving you will have engaged with during this four-week individual or small-group tutorial course. The course comprises 5 one-hour tutorials and 4 assignments, where each assignment must be completed for discussion at the next tutorial. Tutorials are geared to individual levels of ability and set on an 'incline of dificulty' with the objective of raising current skill levels no matter the starting point of any individual candidate. No prior programming knowledge is assumed. Individual timetables are set to match your personal availablity and timing preferences: hence mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekdays, weekends, are all possible for individual arrangement with your personal tutor.

  • Certificated Course runs February 2012
  • Bookings and individual timetables must be confirmed by Saturday 21 January 2012.

  • Suitable for:
  • Employers wishing to raise computing skills level of their staff. Employees wishing to demonstrate achievement in Computational Thinking to current or prospective employers. Anyone seeking to gain a practical insight into how Computer Scientists go about real-life problem solving using computer systems.

  • Maximum 3 Persons per Tutorial Group
  • This course is intended for [1] single individuals; or [2] a pair of individuals of similar ability; or [3] a group of no more than three persons of similar ability who wish to gain a practical introduction to Computational Thinking. The course will include use of Mind Mapping Software, Structured Document Processing Software, and practicals in Computer Programming for the Internet. Importantly, tutorials are geared to the ability and experience of the individual or tutorial group. There is no final examination but a Certificate of Achievement will be awarded where all tutorial assignments have been satisfactorily completed.

  • Course comprises 5 one-hour Tutorials
  • Tutorials 1 and 2 occur in Week 1. Tutorial 3 in Week 2. Tutorial 4 in Week 3; and final Tutorial 5 in Week 4. Individual tutorial timetables are determined with your personal Tutor to best suit your time availablilty and preferences.

  • 4 Tutorial Assignments
  • Assignments are set to raise current abilities no matter the starting point of the tutorial candidate be they beginner or already experienced. Assignments are set for discussion and assessment at the following tutorial. Thus, Assignment 1 is set at Tutorial 1 and must be completed before Tutorial 2 for discussion at Tutorial 2. Assignment 2 completed for Tutorial 3, and so on.
